Celebrating 20 Years of Giving!

Celebrating 20 Years of Doing Good For Others with Turtle Ridge Foundation and Cannon Mountain

Twenty years ago, as a world-class skier,  Bode Miller had seen firsthand the challenges that athletes with disabilities faced when trying to participate in sports. At the time, adaptive programs were rare, and opportunities for these athletes were few and far between. Bode, his family, and a group of like-minded skiers decided to do something—and so, in 2005, the Turtle Ridge Foundation was born. What started as a simple idea with zero dollars quickly gained momentum, and twenty years later, we’ve given away countless grants for the adaptive community and youth sports programs in need of a helping hand.

Determined to provide real opportunities for adaptive athletes, Bode and his family organized their first fundraising efforts—combining skiing and golf to raise money for the first Bretton Woods adaptive program. With no official nonprofit structure yet, Bode secured a $25,000 donation, which kickstarted the program. That initial donation was the spark that fueled something much greater that we’re celebrating twenty years later.

As the foundation grew, so did its reach. The need for adaptive programs was undeniable, but so was the necessity for better resources. Two years later, Bode Fest, one of Turtle Ridge Foundation’s flagship events, moved from Bretton Woods to Cannon Mountain where they’ have sponsored Bode Fest for 18 of our 20 years. The decision was an easy one—Cannon had a growing community of adaptive skiers, and it was where Bode, Kyla and the entire Miller family had grown up skiing. It was only fitting that the event found its home in a place that already fostered the passion and perseverance of athletes of all ages and abilities.

Now, two decades later, the Turtle Ridge Foundation continues to thrive. From its humble beginnings to a fully established nonprofit, the foundation has supported countless adaptive athletes, youth programs, and initiatives that remove barriers to sports. What started as a small idea among friends and family has transformed into a lasting movement—one that embodies Bode’s belief that everyone deserves a chance to experience the joy of sport, regardless of ability.

As we celebrate this milestone, we honor the determination, generosity, and spirit that built Turtle Ridge Foundation, and proudly acknowledge our Bode Fest partners – Cannon Mountain, Opex Technologies, World Cup Supply, Phoenix Timing, and Franconia Ski Club. THE CHALLENGE IN LIFE FOR MOST PEOPLE IS MAKING THE CONSCIOUS DECISION TO DO GOOD FOR OTHERS—OR TO DO NOTHING. IT’S THAT CHOICE THAT DEFINES THE INDIVIDUAL.”
